The Doctoral Department of Vilnius Academy of Arts invites to a public lecture series by design researcher, Professor of Design and History of Knowledge at Humboldt University of Berlin, Dr. Claudia Mareis: Design as a Third Culture of Knowledge.

The lectures will be held in English.

The aim of the lectures is to critically explore the historical, cultural, and material aspects of Design as a third culture of knowledge and creativity, addressing contemporary challenges and future opportunities through interdisciplinary and innovative approaches.

Lecture Program

Monday, 10 February
„Design Research Otherwise: Activating past futures“
This session will focus on design research, including its historical genealogy, critical challenges, and prospective advancements.

Tuesday, 11 February
„Brainstorming Revisited: History of Creative Problem-Solving“
The session will address the rise of the creativity complex in the post-war period, discussing its historical genealogies and contemporary implications.

Wednesday, 12 February
„Matters of Activity: Toward a New Culture of the Material“
This session will present the interdisciplinary research of the Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity, talk about the role of design, and delve into the contested politics of „raw materials“.

Prof. Dr. Claudia Mareis is an expert for Design as well as Cultural History and Theory. Since 2021, she has been Professor of Design and History of Knowledge at the Department of Cultural History and Theory at Humboldt-Universität of Berlin. Her research interests include history, theory and methodology of design in the 20th century, knowledge cultures in design, experimental design and media practices, cultural history of creativity, design and material politics.
