Basic health insurance
International students holding EU citizenship are covered by basic health insurance, which may cover only basic emergency services, but do not guarantee free services by medical treatment. Hence, besides the European health insurance card (EHIC), it is reccommended that you acquire additional health insurance.

Compulsory health insurance
All full-time international students holding EU citizenship at Lithuanian higher education institutions can also choose to be insured with compulsory health insurance at state expense if (must meet all conditions):
To be insured with compulsory health insurance at state expense, a person meeting the above conditions should contact the health insurance fund in person or in writing.

Students with a Temporary residence permit (TRP) in Lithuania are not covered by compulsory health insurance ("Privalomas sveikatos draudimas (PSD)") at the state's expense. Students are responsible to have health insurance throughout the entire timeframe of their studies at the VDA.
International students holding non-EU citizenship are not covered by compulsory health insurance and need to purchase it either in their home country or aborad like Lithuania. Who are registered at the Migration department and who have been issued a document confirming registration (certificate) with the code of a foreigner with interests in Lithuania (ILTU) and the electronic health history (ESI) number, health care services are provided according to the ESI number.

Students studying in Lithuania can be covered by compulsory health insurance (Privalomasis sveikatos draudimas (PSD)) at the state's expense if they have a Permanent residence permit (PRP), not a Temporary residence permit (TRP) in Lithuania. Insurance for such students is issued automatically according to the data provided by the Academy student register.

Before registering to a public health institution it would be good to choose which one you will prefer to be registered, as the most common practice is to choose the one which is most quickly accessible to where you live.

You should also consider finding a family doctor who you can communicate with in one of the languages you speak. After selecting the clinic you can ask for this detail before you are assigned a family doctor. In case there is no available doctor that you can communicate with, you can change the clinic that you will be registered in.
