Abstract

Wet Choreography in Artistic Biotechnology concerns the development and performance of fungix movements in submerged culture. I am taking a closer look at factors that influence fungix and how to interact with fungal dancers through these factors. In other words, I am trying to establish a "choreographic language".

The purpose of this dissertation, beyond its formal academic purpose, is to define a novel field of research and mode of inquiry within the area of the biological arts, colloquially referred to as "Bio-Art". This novel field of research and mode of inquiry is born from the merging of biotechnology, which itself is a merger of engineering and natural sciences, with contemporary art. This synthesis may be referred to as Artistic Biotechnology. The practice of biotechnology, involving work with cultures in vivo and in vitro, is also a form of craft. Within Artistic Biotechnology, both knowledge and artworks are created through biotechnological processes, making the craft of biotechnology an integral and component that cannot be omitted. This journey-oriented research takes a closer look at the following fungix through the lens of choreography: Penicillium italicum, Laetiporus sulphureus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pholiota squarrosa.
