Ioannina Artbook and Zine Festival: Handmade Editions – Department of Graphic Art (VAA)

Date: May 11 – 15, 2025
Opening: May 11 at 6:30 pm
Venue: Historical Archive of Epirus, Sufari Seraj, Glikidon 31, Ioannina 452 21

The exhibition showcases works by emerging graphic artists and professors from the Department of Graphic Art at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. The selection includes books, book-objects, artist books. These works rethink the concept of the book, offering alternative visual forms that transform the book into both an art object and a medium for interpreting and exploring existence, philosophy, aesthetics, and other complex themes.

The artists featured in this exhibition raise key questions: What is a book, and how do we understand it today? How are our perceptions of books today influenced by factors such as prior knowledge, visual form, content, concept, materiality, or tactile experience? The exhibited works use artistic actions to challenge traditional notions of the book’s structure, matter, and aesthetic conventions, expanding the possibilities of its impact. Exploring new roles for the book as a medium of information, the exhibition reveals how the incorporation of contemporary media can extend the transmission of the book’s idea in novel formats. In this way, the book becomes an object of interpretation and philosophical inquiry – sometimes even surpassing its traditional function as a mere vessel for knowledge and data.
