On May 3rd students of Vilnius Academy of Arts who are participating in the workshop of an artist and Australian RMIT University lecturer Dr Jazmina Cininas visited Kaunas. What a day!

After a walk in the VAA Kaunas Faculty Graphics Department, Prof. Rolandas Rimkūnas escorted us to Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, where he told us about the paintings of the painter and graphic artist Mykolas Elvyras Andriolis (1836-1893). It is an interesting coincidence that the day began with Andriolis and ended with him... It turns out that Vincentas Svirskis (1835-1916), a Lithuanian god-craftsman, folk artist, one of the most famous 19th century cross making masters, whose crosses have been preserved in Lithuanian museums, studied anatomy and the secrets of drawing with Andriolis.

The excursion continued at the Kaunas Folk Music Museum, where, after learning about the history of folk music instruments, even the multi-voice song (lith.: sutartinė) was sung together. On the way to the M.K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, a stop was made at the legendary Kaunas doughnut shop. After flying along the "Trails of Angels" in virtual reality, and later on going around the exhibition of M.K. Čiurlionis's works, we were escorted by the wonderful Rytė, the Museum's guardian and researcher of the collection of old sculptures, to the premises of the Museum's foundation, where the images we saw were simply breathtaking. The whole space is a continuous installation!

"Carried away" by the excitement, we headed to the temporary workshop of dr. Jazmina Cininas at the Kaunas Picture Gallery, where the artist is currently in residence and working on new works for her solo exhibition (opening on 30 May at the same gallery). We will invite you!

Then, crossing the inner courtyard of the gallery, we went up to Jazmina's house, where not only the subtleties of Kaunas' modernist architecture were revealed from the inside, but also the unexpectedly discovered by Jazmina, the treasure trove of Elena Jakutytė's (1911-1999) prints and book illustrations. It was very very interesting! And the day was finished with the opening of two exhibitions at the Meno Parkas Gallery.

Jazmina Cininas' visit to the Vilnius Academy of Arts is supported by the Education Exchange Support Fund (ŠMPF) and the VAA.
The visit was initiated and curated by Prof. Marija Marcelionytė-Paliukė of the Graphic Arts Department of the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
