Kadri Toom | “Unlanding“
VDA gallery “5 Malūnai”
2026 04 28–05 22
There are landscapes, structures, patterns and matter. There are wars, pain and suffering. In such a world, what does it mean to make art? Perhaps it is necessary to continue — to search for spaces that hold both stillness and potential. Spaces to disappear into. Spaces where hope, freedom and openness persist.
To find ground — a crack, a hollow, a terrain that belongs to no one. A place without borders, without power. Colors that glow softly, dissolve and recede into darkness. Structures that suggest but never fully reveal themselves. There is always a sense of openness and possibility.
The works unfold through process: pigment, paper, and pressure. Layers build, shift, and overlap. Fragments accumulate and dissolve. Drawn without drawing. Painted without painting.
These are surfaces / fragments of landscapes – without a stable ground. Only fields where landing does not occur. Instead, there is drifting: moving across, through and between layers. Chance is present, guided but never fully controlled. What emerges is not fixed, but in constant transition.
The intensity of color reflects the excess of contemporary experience, while also holding emptiness and the possibility of getting lost. The images suggest landscapes, yet remain unstable — utopian, slipping away as they appear.
There is no ground to land on. Only the possibility to drift.
Kadri Toom (1984, Tallinn) focuses on experimental contemporary printmaking in her artistic practice. Her work often engages with questions of living environments and contemporary spatial perception. Recent works emerge from experiences of landscapes encountered through screens, urban spaces and peripheral fields, forming collage-like still lifes that reflect contemporary ways of thinking and sensing space. Her works are unique (1/1), created through the layered combinations of different techniques. She uses deconstruction and reconstruction as methods of self-expression.
She has participated in international residencies, art projects and workshops and has exhibited widely in Estonia and abroad. Kadri Toom graduated from the Painting Department of Tartu Art College and received her MA in Printmaking from the Estonian Academy of Arts. She is a member of the Estonian Artists' Association and Association of Estonian Printmakers.
The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia and Vilnius Academy of Arts
