Vilnius Academy of Arts gallery ”5 Malūnai“
Exhibition opening October 13, 5 PM
”I’ll stop by you”, she said exhibition at the Gallery ”5 Malūnai” presents the recent woodcuts of artist Noora Nio-Juss. The main theme of the exhibition is a suspended moment of presence, delicate encounters and shared warmth. People are depicted as seen through a window or a curtain. The curtain frames and is a veil between the viewer and the subject.
All works in the exhibition are unique oil-color woodcuts, carved on birch plywood and hand-printed by rubbing onto japanese gampi paper.
For the past ten years I’ve been working intensively with woodcut printmaking. I have been searching for my own expression, my way of making woodcuts and testing scale and modes of presentation. To me my woodcuts move in the borderland of painting and printmaking. The process of creating a woodcut print is linear. The technique and material set limitations and challenges. Carving birch plywood is slow and physical. The image is done in mirror and colors are added at the proofing stage. I often roll all the colors on the same printing matrix and usually make only one unique print.
