I invited Eglė to hold an exhibition at the 5 Malūnai gallery because the image that came to mind was a gallery full of amorphous creations whose material nature you cannot grasp at first glance because you need to walk around, touch, smell, and tap them – it wouldn't leave me alone. Back then, a year or more ago, I didn't even think about how complicated and expensive it would be to transport everything, and that much of it wouldn't even fit through the doors of the Academy…
In September, Eglė calls:
"Marija, do you ever feel that you no longer like everything you've done so far?"
We talk.
"Eglė, I want you to carry nothing and make nothing. Yes, yes, you're used to doing a lot... Let this be a new experience.
The exhibition "(Re)vision of the Final Project" explores the personal relationship between Eglė Pilkauskaitė's studies at the University of the Arts London (UAL) and her final project, as well as its influence on her future creative choices. In her search for a concept, recreating and imitating various processes of material decay, the artist continues to analyze the themes of alienation and materiality. By integrating personal and cultural context into her works, Eglė expands the field of experimentation in her creative practice by introducing new media while striving to remain faithful to the narrative. Eleven years after completing her bachelor's degree in drawing, she is exhibiting her work in an academic setting for the first time. The exhibition is constructed as a memory, whose expository axis is an interactive narrative that draws the visitor into the author's inner dialogue, in which she recreates the events that determined the important choices in her creative choices.
Eglė Pilkauskaitė (1989, Vilnius) is an interdisciplinary artist currently living and working in Vilnius. She holds a bachelor's degree in drawing from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. After completing her studies, she returned to Lithuania and became actively involved in the local and international art scene. The author's work transcends the traditional boundaries of a single art form, which is why her works often take the form of sculptural objects or video installations. In her works, the aesthetics of natural processes and decay intertwine with
personal experiences and elements of the industrial landscapes. During the creative process, the artist devotes most of her time to experimentation, exploring materials and personal boundaries. Collaborating with experts in fields like electrolysis, metal casting, and glasswork opens up new creative horizons for her, spanning everything from research labs to automotive garages.
Eglė's professional experience includes creative, educational, and research work: she has taught students at the Justinas Vienožinskis Faculty of Arts (Department of Photography) at Kaunas College and has also completed an internship at the National Gallery of Art (NDG) in Vilnius. She has participated in 39 exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad: in Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Her final project was selected for the Clyde & Co prize nomination, and she represented Lithuania at the European Glass Festival in Wrocław in the young artist solo debut program. Eglė's works have been acquired by the Lithuanian National Museum and private galleries in Lithuania, France, and Denmark. Her interior design objects are exhibited in Santa Monica and San Diego (USA), and in Lithuania her works can be seen in public spaces – the Senators' Passage and the lobby of the Pacai Hotel.
The author is a member of the London University of the Arts Alumni Association and the Lithuanian Artists' Union.
