On November 22, 2025, the storied halls of Panemunė Castle will come alive with a Gala Event that marks the culmination of a major international conference and celebrates the enduring legacy of artistic collaboration and cultural heritage. This unique evening promises guests an immersive journey through centuries of history, art, and music within one of Lithuania’s most remarkable castles.
Historical Significance of Panemunė Castle
Set on the banks of the Nemunas River in western Lithuania, Panemunė Castle stands as a testament to the region’s turbulent and colorful past. The origins of the castle date back to the early 14th century. It is the best-preserved Renaissance residential castle in Lithuania, having kept its authentic form almost unchanged to this day. The castle was first built by the Teutonic Order and later conquered by Vytenis, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, who, according to legend, is buried within the castle’s grounds.
The castle’s current Renaissance form was shaped between 1604 and 1610 under the direction of Hungarian nobleman Janusz Eperjes and Dutch architect Peter Nonhaardt. Over the centuries, Panemunė Castle has witnessed periods of grandeur and decline, serving as a noble residence, falling into disrepair, and eventually being restored with Baroque and Neo-Classical features by later owners such as Antanas Gelgaudas. Today, it features a blend of Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicist styles and is managed by the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
A Living Monument to Cultural Heritage
Beyond its architectural splendor, Panemunė Castle is full of vibrant culture. Its preserved wall paintings, classicist interiors, castle kitchen with an apothecary exhibit, archaeological finds, prison dungeon, and observation tower offer visitors a window into the layered history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The castle’s grounds, with cascading ponds and a scenic park, further add to its charm.
Throughout the year, Panemunė Castle hosts a variety of events, including music festivals, historical gastronomy symposiums, and exhibitions, reinforcing its role as a center for the arts and heritage in the Baltic region.
The Gala Event: Celebrating Art and History
The Gala Event on November 22 will be a fitting finale to the 16th International Conference “Creativity & Culture,” which brings together leading academic scientists, researchers, scholars, students, and artists to explore the intersections of creativity, heritage, and innovation. The evening’s program is designed to showcase the castle’s unique atmosphere and its ongoing commitment to cultural exchange:
Guided Excursion: Guests will be led through the castle’s historic chambers, learning about its architectural evolution, legendary prison, and the stories of its noble residents.
Exhibition Opening: The official opening of the conference exhibition, featuring artworks created by participants in the conference’s creative workshops.
Festive Dinner: An elegant dinner in the castle’s grand hall will evoke the spirit of past noble feasts, blending tradition with modern culinary artistry.
Baroque Music Concert: The evening will culminate in a special concert by the early music ensemble Šviesotamsa (Chiaroscuro, Light and Shadow). Their program, “Musical Poetry of Sarbievijus: At the Crossroads of Roman and Vilnius Cultures,” will bring to life the poetry of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, intertwined with 17th-century Italian Baroque music—a tribute to the castle’s historical ties to both Lithuanian and European cultural currents.
A Symbolic Closure
As the conference draws to a close within the castle’s walls, the Gala Event embodies the spirit of Panemunė Castle—a place where history is not only preserved but also reimagined through artistic collaboration and scholarly dialogue. The event invites participants to reflect on the conference’s meaningful conversations and to celebrate creative achievements, both of which are essential to shaping the future of culture and creativity.
