Intuitive instructions | Donatas Norušis, curator: Ieva Gražytė | 5/10/2021–22/10/2021

The exhibition “Intuitive instructions” consists of four sound installations using the physical features of sound to tell stories and represent the artist’s approach to the mythology of the art field. Through this methodology, Norušis reveals his approach to sound and its materiality, which serves a different purpose in each work. Not as a medium that requires direct performativity, but as a material that has its own form, symbolism, unique material features and is able to convey information in specific ways.

At times when artists are researching and scientists are creating, engineers are no longer building bridges – they are designing sounds for the machines, which are recording cognition. Our mechanical need to touch the arms of the sounds, to feel the horns of the echo, to hear the hoofing of the empty space. The symbolic Minotaur has been coming and going for centuries. Countless bridges were built for that without closing the way under- neath: for the empty volumes, uncoordinated moves, invisible shapes (constantly protruding through the road barriers) and fluid materials flowing under it. At times when artists are analysing and scientists are fantasysing, engineers are no longer designing tunnels – they are developing the sound structures for the walls of noises. We are walking through these undergrounds of silence with someone secretly recording our intuition to the already heard soundtrack. Somewhere in it you can hear a herd of iron cows and bells inside each one of them. We will not be killing the Minotaur today – we will tame this brutally looking, uncanny steer.

Donatas Norušis and Ieva Gražytė are currently fourth-year students of the Department of Sculpture at VAA. Ieva Gražytė works with text and explores how new technologies interact with art. Donatas Norušis is currently actively working in the audiovisual field, researching the materiality of sound, symbolism, and its sculptural properties. The first presentations of works took place at light festivals and group exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. The first personal exhibition "Autho correct" was presented in 2018, in Vilnius.

- I don't know physics, I don't write stories.
- It's something with music here.
- Something with physics, I'll tell you.

On the 15th of October, a performance will be performed during the “Art After Hours”. Performance, the current relationship between artist’s anxiety, excitement and the gallery space is exhibited. Experimental sounds concentrated in the low frequency spectrum use binaural rhythms with meditative properties. At the same time, the electricity generated by the artist’s pulse intensity and the vibrations of the gallery walls will unpredictably disrupt the subtle frequency balance.

Opening of the exhibition will take place on the 5th of October at 6 PM at the VAA gallery Artifex (Gaono str. 1, Vilnius).

Only those with valid vaccine certificates will be able to participate in the opening.
