Aim

The aim of textile art and design master studies – to prepare the contemporary textile artist with a shaped artistic worldview, critical thinking skills, professional and general competences necessary for individual creative and research art activities to implement innovations.

Profile of study programme

Textile MA studies programme operate at the crossroads of the visual art and design, where the knowledge of the materials and technologies play an important role. Such multi-layered contemporary approach to the textile is both a challenge and a field of opportunities for the international textile community. The continuous influx of new materials, technologies and methods and interdisciplinarity arising from their interactions shape the dynamic role of the textile practitioner of the 21st century. Therefore, these MA studies focus not only on the relevant topics of today, but also the analysis of future prospects, and development of new scenarios.

The two-year-long programme encourages the pursuit of the personal creative identity, development of the creative position and representation. Based on the individually tailored and defined study topic, the student chooses or creates new work methods familiarise themselves with the relevant aspects of research methodology, that help develop the creative project and formulate the theoretical paper. The theoretical part is developed in close connection with the final creative project and helps the students to prepare for independent professional activities that require creative and critical thinking, the ability to formulate ideas, to present them logically and persuasively.

The student is also encouraged to cooperate with the experts of other fields (higher schools, labs, companies): researchers, scientists and practitioners. This collaboration can result in innovations or solutions in the fields of art, science and technologies, related to the sustainable development needs and challenges, reflecting professional, social and cultural needs of the society. In this Master’s study programme, we emphasise the concept of sustainability, developed in all areas and processes of the artistic and functional textile. We think that the future textile should reflect the needs of society in terms of sustainable life and sustainable principles thereof, encouraging the change of habits, following the ecological ethics and fundamental changes of life.

Occupational profiles of graduates

Graduates can choose the path of the professional creator, using artistic textile as their main or integrational means of expression, and work professionally in various areas of textile design (interior, clothes, accessories, etc.), communicate with other science institutions and business enterprises. The graduate can combine the individual creative practice with various projects, competitions, participation in Lithuanian and foreign exhibitions, the activities of art galleries and compete for educational and individual grants. They can also participate successfully in other cultural activities: work in the theatre as artists, the industries of cinema or ads, organisers of cultural events as well as curators. The graduates of our programme organise private art affairs, work as specialists and experts in museums and galleries, work as teachers in schools of higher education and other educational institutions, continue their research and creativity activities as PhD studies.
