Invitation to Vilnius Academy of Arts Students
On March 4 at 16:30, the streets of Vilnius city center will come alive with the vibrant and boisterous Shrovetide celebration—a lively procession that gathers hundreds of participants and culminates in a concert and dancing near the White Bridge. Each year, the event reflects current social themes, ranging from urban life to societal changes. This year, special attention is given to Vilnius’ green initiatives, the rising costs of public transport, and the lost royal insignia.
We aim to bring together a diverse range of communities and warmly invite Vilnius Academy of Arts (VAA) students not only to celebrate but also to experience the preparation process firsthand. This is a great opportunity to explore the urban expressions of ethnic cultural traditions and engage with them in a hands-on way.
How Can You Participate?
At the Vilnius Ethnic Culture Center, we will host free creative workshop, where you can craft your own traditional Shrovetide mask. During the workshop, you will also learn about the evolution of Shrovetide—how its symbolism and meaning have transformed over time. The workshop will take place on February 21 at 2:00 PM.
There is only one condition: if you make a mask, you must wear it and join the procession! These masks are meant to come alive in the energy of the celebration, creating an authentic and immersive Shrovetide experience.
All those wishing to participate in the workshop must register via the Google Form. Registration is open until February 18th, 23:00 h.
We look forward to your participation—Shrovetide without noise and chaos is no Shrovetide at all!
