Aim

Prepare master's degree graphic design specialists conforming to international standards and able to critically analyze and interpret graphic design phenomena in an interdisciplinary context, carry out scientific research in a graphic design field and effectively function in complex situations when clear instructions and prepared information are not available.

Profile of study programme

The second cycle graphic design study programme corresponds to the mission and development strategy of the VAA provided in the Statute of the Vilnius Academy of Arts. The programme is in line with the general principles of the Bologna Declaration (1999): the credit system, the social dimension, mobility, the importance of professional development, cooperation, the Tuning (2006) project insights and the Dublin descriptors (2004). This programme also belongs to the State's priority area of ​​culture.
During the studies, general and subject competencies are deepened, knowledge of research methodology and creative skills are provided, which allow to carry out artistic and scientific research independently and to develop an individual creative strategy; emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity and cross-sectoral cooperation. By communicating with other departments of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuanian and European universities, interdisciplinary studies are encouraged, which give students the opportunity not only to deepen, but also to expand the field of master's studies.
After completing the second cycle studies, the graduate acquires the competencies of a graphic design specialist in accordance with international standards and a master's qualification: the ability to conduct research independently; to critically evaluate and interpret graphic design phenomena and processes in a broad local and international cultural context; to solve complex social, scientific and ethical problems in the field of the profession; understand their social responsibility as a graphic design professional and make ethical and socially responsible decisions; use innovative solutions to solve design problems and improve professional and interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and understanding in solving problems in a new, unfamiliar environment in the absence of information and clear guidelines; to professionally apply communication skills in presenting the relevance of the problem and the solution to both professionals and a wider audience; to responsibly develop professional creative activity both individually and in an interdisciplinary team; to proceed to doctoral studies in art and work in the field of design education.

Occupational profiles of graduates

Competences of the Graphic Design master's study programme graduates conform to the international standards and the master’s qualification. The graduates are competent participants of national and international projects; directors of individual companies; art directors able to work with different specialists and manage complex design projects; professors successfully performing educational activities in universities and other educational institutions, freelance graphic designers carrying out individual creative activity. Master degree graduates are also ready to participate in doctoral studies of art.
