APIE PASKAITĄ

“I wear whatever I want whenever I want. I don’t call it drag; I don’t call it cross-dressing. It's just wearing a dress.”

Eddie Izzard

The theorization of transvestism in the context of fashion and queer scholarship allows for the expansion of conventional categories of sex, gender, and sexuality, creating new knowledge about existing variants of transvestism in the public domain. The aim of this paper is to investigate what role male transvestism plays in contemporary fashion. Is it able to subvert and transform gender norms? In what ways can transvestism be linked to queerness? The challenge is to discuss transvestism as a relatively common visual practice without framing it as a political statement or utopian location. Even more challenging is the task of defining transvestism as a particular event while dismissing the multiple social, economic, and cultural implications that continuously shift the meanings and objectives of the practice. Male transvestism is a complex phenomenon that is constructed around the significance of clothing, gender politics, and social trends. To investigate the specificity and variety of transvestism practices, it is essential to consider the motive [if any], the context, gender performance, sociocultural setting, head-to-toe clothing style, and the manner in which clothing is worn. My scholarly inquiry is situated in the context of the social, the cultural and the historical. This epistemological study applies the methodology of knowledge as praxis, treating knowledge production as an activity engaged in the study of the social and political aspects related to the practice of transvestism in the global context.
