The aim of Textile Art Media bachelor study programme is to prepare specialists of broad profile in applied textile by providing them with theoretical and practical knowledge and skills of applied textile and art, practical skills of visual art and textile technologies, develop their creativity, ability to analyse and interpret textile art processes. After graduating, textile artist is able to independently solve creative tasks, work on group projects, apply practical skills in implementing new ideas, participate in exhibitions, develop a unique artistic style and attitude, continue with masters degree studies.

According to Textile Department’s vision Textile art and media bachelor study programme consists of three main areas, which are all part of the 4 year study programme: human being, environment and society. Programme is divided into four main structural segments that gradually lead to the final project.

Applied Textile and Technology – 1st year of the programme is intended for decoration and formation of fabric surface. Students gain practical skills in single/unique fabric decoration and formation methods, including classical and experimental pattern-making techniques. Students are taught complete fabric designs using mottling, screen-printing and painting techniques.

2nd year is dedicated to the creation of fabrics using classical and digital technologies. Students gain design and practical skills in creating single/unique woven fabrics, including classical and digital weaving techniques (digital weaving/jacquard and digital print making).

Applied Textile, Human Being and Object – 3rd year is intended for applied and wall fabric/tapestries and three-dimensional textile design development and adaptation to human and environmental needs. Individual approach is encouraged while students master classical and experimental tapestry techniques, three-dimensional textile design and construction. Implementation of three-dimensional object is performed in practical workshops applying graphic, sculptural and 3D computer-aided media by innovatively interpreting chosen topics and the artistic context.

Applied Textile and Concept – 4th year – textile in architectural and social contexts. Students develop knowledge of artistic textile application in social and artistic contexts, e.g. starting with the application of tapestry in architectural context to development and implementation of a textile object dedicated to a specific target audience (community). Through a series of theoretical lectures and practical workshops students’ critical/analytical thinking as well as contextual perception are developed. During classroom discussions, chosen themes and topics (that students chose individually and often come close to social aspects) are analysed and the ability to advocate students’ own creative ideas is encouraged. Students learn to implement original and creative conceptual ideas in collaborating with art professionals and non-arts-based researchers-academics. Individual approach to problem solving is encouraged.

Practice placements take place during the first three years after the exam session. These placements are directly linked to the development of skills after each year of study (e.g. placement within textile industry/production is intended for adaptation of creative projects in textile industry companies). Since 2014 students participate in joint international creative projects (KUNO programme). During the summer practice placements students cooperate with textile production companies while carrying out creative projects, become acquainted with production processes and the needs and requirements of the textile market.

Bachelor degree project is the final project students work on during their studies. Students master and expand their theoretical, practical and technological knowledge of specialty subjects, carry out research into a chosen topic/theme, define project goals and tasks and search for suitable solutions to a creative problem. The final project is realised/implemented by choosing the most appropriate means of expression and is presented in an exhibition. Students defend their work in a public oral exam (viva voce) and must also submit a description of the final project.
