About the project.
The aim of this project is to research the forms and significance of cultural professionals’ participation in social movements in Lithuania in the 1990s–2010s. By its concept and the time period covered, it is a new research in the Lithuanian context. Social movement research in post-Soviet countries is rather scarce, as compared to Western and North European countries that have an established tradition of social movement studies and dedicated research centres. In Lithuania, the social movement research up to now was focused mostly on the Soviet period and the struggle for the country’s independence. Meanwhile the ties between cultural field and social movements in independent Lithuania remain underresearched, with no attempt to discuss their development and reasons, roles and positions taken by cultural professionals, nor factors behind social movements’ waves.
