Viktorija Kemeklė | Limbo

From the depth of thick darkness, a blink of artificial light might seem threatening. Eyes lock with a staring pair of shining dots as they stand out of the homogeneous dark. Layers of paint merge shadows in to one mass that take up an entirely new shape. Unrecognisable of what it was before, it now manifests ephemeral illusions in flesh, on a surface of canvas.

As the title of the exhibition suggests, this series of paintings aim to present a sort of sense of transition. The state of limbo is on a threshold of change, walking a thin line between two planes. As we keep erasing the borders between real and artificial, we create a new way of being. Which is for now unrecognised and alarming. In a way, so does painting as a medium, materialising images between physical and mental.

When painting happens, it does so through time. Never instant or momentary, although viewing of the painted image is. It happens through movement and yet in the end it is still. The mediating expression of painting collides within itself separate senses of being and allows something entirely different to emerge from its surface.
