Seminar “Processes of legitimation in Contemporary art”

April 4th, 10:00-12:00

Introduction of an analytic study of the media, commercial and institutional phenomenon of the group of Young British Artists during the decades of change from the XX to the XXI centuries.

The present study will try to delimit the system of contemporary art as a whole. Focusing on the legitimation processes of the current artist and his works. Assuming the very conformation of the art system, its agents and its legitimizing capacity during the period of the nineties and the beginning of the 21st century, the fundamental axis on which the whole analysis revolves. At a specific level, it fits into the socio-political reality of the end-of-century England, which will promote the consecration of a group of creators then called the Young British Artists (YBA). A generation of artists who knew how to take advantage of and incorporate elements of marketing, advertising and the mass media into the sphere of international art. Within the case study focused on the YBA group, will be the figure of Damien Hirst and his career, the main object analyzed, because this controversial artist was the standard-bearer of that generation.

Key words: Legitimation processes, Contemporary Art, Young British Artists.
